Marshals

Asaba, Nov. 8, 2025 (NAN) Federal Road Safety Corps Marshal Shehu Muhammed has urged special marshals to understand the security dynamics of their operational environment and adopt proactive measures to stay safe.

Muhammed gave the advice on Saturday at the 2025 Special Marshal Sectoral Workshop with the theme: “Enhancing Security and Safety Strategies for Special Marshals Operations”.

He was represented at the event in Asaba by Assistant Corps Marshal Edward Odiete.

According to him, the workshop was for reflection, renewal and recommitment to road safety.

“We face challenges ranging from insecurity on the highways, public apathy and misinformation, to the rising risks associated with road traffic management.

“Ensuring the safety and security of our special marshals during operations is not just desirable – it is imperative.

“No one can effectively advocate safety if he operates in unsafe conditions.

“This workshop, therefore, aims to provide the knowledge, tools and collaborative strategies needed to make our activities more secure, efficient impactful,” he said.

He urged the participants to reflect on risk awareness and personal security.

“Every special marshal must understand the security dynamics of their operational environment and adopt proactive measures to stay safe.

“Strengthening synergy between regular marshals and special marshals will enhance both safety and efficiency during joint operations,” he added.

He said that security was a shared responsibility, urging the marshals to deepen collaboration with communities, law enforcement agencies, transport unions and traditional institutions to foster mutual trust and collective vigilance.

“The FRSC will continue to develop frameworks that will enhance volunteer welfare, operational coordination and training.

“We are also exploring partnerships with security agencies to improve escort arrangements and emergency response during high-risk deployments.

“Beyond policy and planning, the true strength of our operations lies in you, the special marshals. Your discipline, professionalism and adherence to the corps core value remain our greatest asset.

“As we engage in today’s deliberations, let us remember that every insight shared and every recommendation made will contribute to a safer operational environment and realisation of our collective vision to eradicate road crashes and create a safe motoring culture.”

Brig.-Gen. Efe Edafioghor, in his keynote address, urged the participants to see themselves not only as enforcers of traffic rules and regulations but also as contributors to human security, community resilience and national stability.

The lecture was entitled: “Best Practices in Security Operations for Special Marshals”.

Edafioghor said that special marshals embodied the concept of citizen participation in law enforcement, noting that they served voluntarily and performed critical statutory functions in support of the FRSC.

According to him, special marshals’ dual identity as civilians and security enablers demands professionalism, discretion and integrity.

“For special marshals to function effectively, they must cultivate community intelligence networks, observe, record and report suspicious activities through the appropriate channels.

“Collaboration with local vigilantes, community leaders and sister agencies enhances response capability. No single institution can secure the society alone.

“Special marshals must strengthen cooperation with the police, military, NSCDC and local security committees to build a united security front,” he added.

He urged the participants to remember that integrity would command respect, adding that they should development their competencies.

“Your power lies in public trust. Avoid extortion, abuse of authority and conduct unbecoming of a uniformed agency representative. Let us uphold the values of discipline, collaboration and professionalism.

“Let us act always as partners in national development guided by the principle that security is not the absence of threat, but the presence of preparedness.

“I commend Delta State special marshals for their resilience and contributions to national security.

“Let this workshop strengthen your resolve and renew your sense of duty to our nation,” he said. (NAN)(nannews.com.ng)
