Lagos, July 18, 2024 (NAN) Yusuf Durosinlorun, the Technical Chairman, Nigeria Squash Federation (NSF) on Thursday, applauded players at the ongoing Prime Atlantic Squash Championships.




Durosinlorun told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos, that the standard of play displayed at the tournament has been impressive.




He said that the players both at the U-16, and U-19 levels have been able to match up with top seeded players,while a few number of them have been identified as future stars.



One of the upset of the tournament was U 19 player Jadesola Olatunji's victory over number five seeded player in the tournament Udeme James 3-2 which got Olatunji a spot at the quarter finals.



“We are proud that the tournament has brought the best out of the players, the level of competition is high and the junior players are as well proving their worth.


“There is a big improvement as compared to the previous two editions and we can only thank the organisers for the sponsorship.


“We need more sponsors to come and support the game and develop our future champions,”Durosinlorun said.


Similarly, Salome Iyelih, a squash coach with Mena Sports Academy, said she was proud of the level of skills showcased so far.


“I’m proud of what I’m seeing so far in the competition as the players are performing at a very high standard.


“They have been very impressive and competitive in their games as compared with what we witnessed in the lass two editions.


“We need more of competitions like this to make players step up the ladder and prove their qualities, they can even gain some Scott mg points at the end of the competition,”Iyelih said.




Benjamin Monday 15 years old of Headwaters Squash Academy player defeated a senior player Moses Elekanachi of Edo State 3-0 to progress to the second round of the tournament.




At the day four competition, Shuaib Giwa defeated Usman Abdulsalam, 11-6, 11-6, 11-6 (3-0) at the junior boys category.


Ahisat Abdulraheem crushed Khadijat Durosilorun, 11-4, 11-4, 11-4 (3-0) at the U-16 girls category, while Loveth Balogun beat Chioma Ude 11-6, 5-11,12-14, 11-4, 11-8 (3-2).


The competition which holds at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, Lagos served off on July 15 and to come to an end on July 20.
