Asaba, Oct. 12, 2024 (NAN) The Deputy Governor of Delta State, Monday Onyeme, has commended the special marshals of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) for their effort in traffic management to and promoting road safety.
Onyeme said this on Saturday at the 2024 Special Marshal Zonal Conference and Commissioning of Special Marshals’ Secretariat in Asaba.
The theme of the conference was “Leveraging Technology for Improved Traffic Management and Enforcement:The FRSC Digitalised Approach”.
According to Onyeme, road crashes have reduced, but the numbers remain unacceptably high; therefore, commuters and transport unions must join hands in the awareness and prevention initiatives.
“There is still much more work to be done in terms of awareness, sensitisation and infrastructure to help mitigate this menace called traffic crashes on our roads.
“You should continually visit motor parks to dissuade drivers from taking alcohol or any substance capable of affecting their moods and psyches.
“You should also go to the grassroots to engage the traditional rulers and community leaders on ways to educate their people on measures to take to avoid road crashes,”he said.
The deputy governor urged motorists, especially commercial drivers, to adhere to traffic rules, avoid overloading, and refrain from using phones while driving, and other factors bedeviling road safety in the country.
Stella Orakwe, an Assistant Corps Marshal, said that the building was a testament to the power of collaboration and community effort.
“The special marshals of the Delta Sector Command have showcased the highest level of dedication and patriotism by championing this project.
“Their generosity and commitment have made this project a reality, providing a beautiful, functional space that will significantly enhance their operations and help serve the people of Delta State,” She said.
Mr Kennedy Odafe, Delta State Coordinator, Special Marshal, said that the secretariat would serve as a hub for training, planning, and operations.
“It will also allow us to work more efficiently and to make greater impact in our fight to reduce road traffic crashes.
“It will serve as a base from which we can amplify our operations, collaborate more effectively with FRSC, and increase our impact across Delta State,” he said.
He, however, said that the role of the special marshals is vital in complementing the efforts of the FRSC to reduce road traffic crashes, promote compliance with road safety regulations, and ultimately save lives.(NAN)(nannews.com.ng)
