Asaba, Nov. 18, 2024 (NAN) The Federal Road Safety Corps has appealed to road users to embrace safety practices while using the road.
Mr Frederick Ogidan, Sector Commander, FRSC Delta Command, made the appeal at a news conference in commemoration of World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Crash Victims (RTC) on Monday in Asaba.
He said; The theme for this year’s World Day of Remembrance for RTC Victims is “That Day’.
“The theme was carefully crafted to tell the stories of ‘That Day’ when traffic collisions stopped or changed the course of the victims lives forever.
“Each victim has his or her own story of that day, which their relatives, friends and acquaintances carry in their memory forever.
“Therefore, on World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims 2024, we remember the stories of “that day”.
The objectives of the year 2024 World Day of Remembrance for RTCs Victims are to provide a platform for road traffic victims and their families to remember all the people killed and seriously injured on the roads.
“We should acknowledge the crucial work of the emergency services. Draw attention to the generally trivial legal response to culpable road deaths and injuries.
“Advocate for an appropriately serious response advocate for better support for road traffic victims and victim families.
“And promote evidence-based actions to prevent and eventually stop further road traffic deaths and injuries,” he said.
Ogidan called on motorists, pedestrians and all road users to recognise the fact that ‘road traffic crashes kill more passengers than drivers’ urging them to remember that road safety is a collective responsibility.
“Please obey all traffic rules and ensure safety requirements especially during the end of the year yuletides, as we advocate for attitudinal change of all drivers, tri-cyclists, cyclists and the public,” he added.
According to him, every year, families, businesses, and communities across Delta state and Nigeria bear the heavy burden of road crashes, which results in loss of lives, injuries, and economic setbacks.
“Data from our records indicate that, in many cases, it is the passengers who suffer the most severe consequences of road crashes.
“These alarming statistics demand that passengers and all road users recognise and speak out against behaviours that compromise road safety.
“Crashes do not discriminate, and we must all take responsibility for creating safer roads,” he said.(NAN)(nannews.com.ng)
