Asaba, Dec. 5, 2024 (NAN) The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has urged corps members to respect the cultural norms and traditions of the people where they find themselves in during the service year.

The Director- General (D-G) of NYSC, Brig.-Gen. Yusha’u Ahmed, said this on Wednesday during a tour of NYSC orientation camp, Issele-uku, and a chat with Batch C stream 1 of the NYSC members in the camp.

According to him, there may be minor differences between the people’s ways of life and the ones they are used to.

“You have to learn to show understanding and adaptability as a way of justifying some of the reasons for the national service.

“Do not to joke with the culture of the host community you are serving in; add value wherever you are posted to.

“You should try and learn their culture and get acquainted with it. Anywhere you see yourself, you should try to adjust yourselves and do not look down on anyone,” he said.

The D-G also urged the corps members to always make themselves available to participate in all camp activities, adding, “take all camp programmes very seriously”.

”There are about 12 skills which we sensitise the corps members to during the orientation camp exercise and we encourage them to pick a skill of their interest, so that they can develop on it and become independent.

“We are in collaboration with the Bank of Industry, Unity Bank, Access Bank and NNPC Foundation, amongst others, that are ready to provide grants and loans at no interest.

“Do not rely solely on your certificate, acquire a skill so that it will help you in future,” the director-general advised.

Speaking on posting of corps members for primary assignments, he warned the corps members against indulging in “self-rejection”.

“Most times, corps members ask to be rejected or relocated, but we emphasise that they accept their postings in good faith. Go there and give in their best.

“How will you say you know Nigeria well, when all you know is the state that you were born in. You went to school there and when posted, you will still ask to be redeployed there,” he said.

Ahmed, who declared that the welfare and security of the corps members remained the scheme’s top agenda, warned them against embarking on unauthorised journeys.

“Please do not travel unnecessarily without the permission of camp authorities so that you can be accounted for,” he said.

He also called on corps members to adhere strictly to the scheme’s dress code and embrace regimented camp life.

“You are representing the image of the scheme, therefore, you must live up to expectations. Your dressing and appearance must conform to the NYSC dress code and with the kits provided for the period.”

The D-G, who expressed delight at the state of the camp, urged the corps members to be disciplined and practise best hygiene to guide against any form of disease.

Mr John Kwaghe, the State Coordinator, NYSC, said that the conduct of the corps members had so far been commendable, characterised by peace, discipline, and enthusiasm for the activities lined up for the orientation course and entire service year.

“This positive attitude is a strong indication of their readiness to embrace the ideals of the scheme and their commitment to serving Nigeria with diligence,” he said.(NAN)(nannews.com.ng)
