Four academies reach basketball competition semi finals

Asaba, July 12, 2025 (NAN) Four academies have qualified for the semi finals of the on-going Grassroots Discovery of Women in Sports basketball competition tagged: Miss Amnesty Nigeria.
The teams are Bayelsa Queens, Delta Queens, Discovery Academy and Divine Speed Academy.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Grassroots Discovery of Women in Sports is being sponsored by Tracy Macwary Foundation and held at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba.
Divine Speed Academy of Warri edged Peace Academy also of Warri 38–13 in a hard-fought opening game.
With two wins in Group A, Divine Speed Academy of Warri have secured a semi final place and await their opponent from Group B.
Similarly, Bayelsa Queens crushed Peace Academy Warri 18–4 to also reach the semifinals.
In other matches, Discovery Academy, Warri, beat Anambra Queens 25–15 in their first appearance.
The Delta Queens Asaba later beat Discovery Academy Warri 36–26 to book their semi final place.
Mrs Tracy Macwary of Tracy Macwary Foundation said that the foundation is all about empowering the girl child through sports.
“We are organising a basketball competition as part of Tracy Macwary Foundation empowerment initiative to lift women off the streets and also encourage women to be productive in the society.
“The winner will be given 1.5 million naira, second prize is One million naira and the third prize is 500 thousand naira respectively,” Macwary said.
Coach Tony Nelson of Bayelsa Queens in an interview with NAN said his team is confident of reaching the final.
“We have trained hard and are determined to overcome any opposition we face in the competition,” Nelson said.
He added that their success is rooted in commitment to sports, especially basketball, having produced national players over the years.
“We are proud of our achievements and our commitment to youth development through sports at Bayelsa Queens,” Nelson said.
The two semi finals will continue at the Indoor Sports Hall of the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba on Sunday.(NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
