Gov. Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta has urged the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members to take full advantage of the scheme’s Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development programme for self-reliance and economic growth.

Oborevwori gave the advice on Friday at the Swearing-in ceremony of Batch B, stream II, corps members at the NYSC Orientation Camp, Issele-Uku.

 
The governor was represented by the state Commissioner for Youth Development, Mr Brave Enodeh.

According to him, in today’s competitive world, success requires more than academic qualifications.

The governor said that success would require innovation, adaptability and entrepreneurial skills.

He said that for more than five decades, the NYSC scheme had strengthened national unity, promoted cultural integration and fostered peaceful coexistence.

The governor urged the corps members to uphold the scheme’s ideals of patriotism, resilience, discipline and selfless service.

“The oath you are about to take is a solemn commitment to serve Nigeria with loyalty, discipline, integrity and selflessness.

“As you begin this journey, remember that while your certificates have brought you this far, your character, values and choices will determine how far you go.

“Let this service year prepare you for a lifetime of excellence, integrity and purposeful leadership.

“As you settle in camp life, embrace every activity and every opportunity to build friendships across cultural divides, develop leadership skills, and deepen your commitment to national unity,” he said.

The governor said that such experiences would remain with the corps members long after their national service year.

“The success of your service year depends on you. Your attitude, discipline, and commitment to duty will determine the impact you make,” he added.

He said that the state government gave priority to the security and welfare of corps members.

“We will continue to work closely with the NYSC to provide a safe and supportive environment throughout your service year,” he said.

The state Coordinator of NYSC, Mr John Kwaghe, urged the corps members to see their deployment to Delta as an opportunity to contribute meaningfully to the development of the state.

“I must commend the conduct of corps members, who have displayed commendable discipline, loyalty and enthusiasm toward achieving the objectives of the orientation course,” he said.

Kwaghe commended the state government for donating 1,500 mattresses for a newly-constructed hostel in the camp.

“For this and many other kind gestures, Your Excellency, we are indeed grateful,” he said.

Kwaghe noted that the government had approved renovation of the camp’s multipurpose hall and construction of a befitting pavilion for the camp.

He appealed to the state government to begin the renovation and construction, saying that the multipurpose hall was in a bad shape.

“The bad situation hinders effective discharge of lectures and other indoor activities during rainy season.

“I equally want to appeal to His Excellency for sinking of an additional borehole to address the challenge of inadequate water supply and incessant breakdown of the only borehole on camp.”

He said that a total of 2,028 prospective corps members, comprising 949 males and 1,079 females, were duly registered for the orientation course. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
