Obi pledges to channel Niger Delta wealth to develop the region

Asaba - The Nigeria  Democratic Congress (NDC), Presidential Candidate, Mr Peter Obi, has pledged to channel back the wealth generated from the Niger Delta to develop the region after decades of neglect.

Obi made the pledge on Thursday while   inaugurating  the NDC Delta headquarters and the official opening of the party campaign office in Asaba.

He said the region had continued to produce wealth shared across the country, stressing that its people should see the impact of the resources.

“They are producing the wealth we share every month,” Obi said.

Obi said that government must ensure that resources generated from the region are used to improve the lives of its people to.reflect the quantum of wealth being generated from the area.

He said when elected, his administration would make the impact of the country’s wealth visible through improved infrastructure, healthcare and other essential services.

Obi expressed concern over the condition of major roads in the region, particularly the East-West Road.

He said poor road infrastructure had affected movement and economic activities and should be addressed to unlock the region’s potential.

Obi also pledged to improve healthcare delivery and ensure that Nigerians could access quality medical treatment within the country.

According to the NDC Presidential Candidate the era where government officials travel abroad to access healthcare care will be gone.

“The case where you do not see the impact of your wealth is gone.

“We will ensure that those of them who have power will seek medical care here".

He said Nigeria had the human resources and other requirements needed to provide effective healthcare for its citizens.

Obi said public resources must be deployed to address challenges confronting Nigerians and produce tangible improvements in their lives.

He said his administration would pursue changes in governance to make the government more responsive to the needs of its citizens.

He also called for peace, emphasising that security and stability were necessary for development in the Niger Delta and the country.

He said the inauguration of the office was part of efforts to strengthen engagement with Nigerians and promote his vision for the country, adding that he would return for campaign activities and continue to engage Nigerians on his plans.

He said the objective was to build a Nigeria where the country’s resources would translate into improved living conditions for its citizens.

Also speaking, the Delta NDC Governorship Candidate, Mr Chris Iyovwaye, pledged to ensure public resources are deployed to benefit citizens if elected.

Iyovwaye said public revenue and resources should be channelled toward improving citizens’ lives, rather than being diverted for private interests.

“Obi will make sure that they go to the people. He is not going to use public money or private money,” Iyovwaye said.

Iyovwaye said Nigeria faced challenges including poor infrastructure, insecurity and unemployment, urging Nigerians to use the 2027 elections to demand improved leadership.
