Oborevwori tasks corps members on service, humility to host community
Asaba
Gov. Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta has urged Corps members to be commitment to service and remain humble in their host communities.
The governor gave the advice at the opening ceremony of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Batch C stream 1 on Friday at the Orientation, camp Issele- Uku.
Represented by Mr Brave Enodeh, the Commissioner for Youth Development, Oborevwori urged Corps members to let their service year be guided by the spirit of “Service and Humility.”
“Wherever you are posted, demonstrate commitment to your duties and respect for the people and institutions within your host communities.
“Remember that even the smallest contribution, when made with sincerity and dedication, can make a meaningful difference.
“I encourage you to embrace your host communities, contribute meaningfully to their development and leave behind a legacy of service that will be remembered beyond your period of national assignment,” he said
He said NYSC remained an important platform for preparing young Nigerians for the responsibilities of citizenship and nation-building.
He urged them to approach the orientation course with seriousness and enthusiasm, and to participate fully in the lectures, physical drills, practical sessions and other activities designed to prepare you for the service year.
He said: “The lessons and experiences you gain here should help build discipline, resilience, leadership capacity and a strong sense of patriotism.
“I encourage you to remain attentive and committed, knowing that the values you acquire during this period will continue to serve you long after your service year”.
Oborevwori said that the NYSC programme provided a valuable opportunity to strengthen national unity and integration.
He also urged Corp members to use this opportunity to understand and appreciate one another, build lasting friendships and deepen the bonds that unite the country.
“As you interact with fellow Corps Members, camp officials and members of your host communities, let mutual respect, tolerance and cooperation guide your conduct.
“The ability to work harmoniously with people from different backgrounds is an important quality for effective leadership and responsible citizenship,” he said.
He urged them to take full advantage of the various programmes provided during the orientation course, particularly the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme.
“The skills and knowledge acquired through SAED can open new opportunities for entrepreneurship, innovation and self-reliance in an economy where young people must be prepared not only to seek opportunities but also to create them,” he said.
He said that the state government remains committed to the welfare and security of Corps Members deployed to the state.
“We recognise the importance of providing a conducive environment for your orientation and service, and we have commenced efforts to give this camp a facelift.
“As part of these interventions, the State Government is prioritising the construction of a new borehole and the rehabilitation of critical facilities within the camp.
“These project is aimed at improving the general conditions of the camp and making your orientation experience more comfortable.
“The state government will continue to collaborate with the NYSC authorities, security agencies and other relevant stakeholders to promote the safety, welfare and effective deployment of Corps Members across the State.
“We value your contributions to our communities and will continue to provide the necessary support within the resources available to us,” he said.
Earlier, Mr John Kwaghe, the NYSC State Coordinator, urged Corps Members to see their deployment to Delta as an opportunity to contribute meaningfully to the development and youth-focused policies of the state government.
“I must also commend the exemplary conduct of the Corps participants, who have so far displayed commendable discipline, and are gradually adjusting towards achieving the objectives of the Orientation Course,” he said.
Kwaghe commended Gov. Oborevwori on the donation of 1,500 mattresses for the newly constructed hostel towards the welfare of Corps Members deployed to the state.
“Also the recently completed re-roofing and renovation work on the multi-purpose hall, will significantly improve effective discharge of our lectures and other indoor activities during this raining season and subsequent Orientation,” he said.
He appealed to the state government to sink additional industrial borehole to address the challenge of inadequate water supply and incessant break down of the only existing borehole.
He also appealed for provision of a new generator to power the camp to replace the exiting one which capacity could no longer server the camp.
He disclosed that a total of 1,530 prospective Corps Members, comprising 650 males and 880 females, reported and were duly registered. (NAN)
